BUYING POWER

The technical definition of buying power -is the number of goods/services that can be purchased with a unit of currency. For example, if you had taken one pound to a store in the 1950s, you would have been able to buy a greater number of items than you would today.

The fashion definition of buying power is-  the sales increase that can be seen after use of a celebrity.

What do i mean ??

Here is a great example I found while browsing The Business of Fashion Blog ( Im going to take this opportunity to say TAKE A LOOK at this website, all the facts you need to know about what's going on behind the shiny shop doors of all the designers.... I particularly enjoy seeing who is suing who this week). Every single magazine in the US showed a decrease in sales apart from VOGUE. you may think this is predictable but its not simply because of customer loyalty to the magazine it is thanks to Lady GaGa!

In March 2011 when this issue was released the magazines sales went up by 100,000.

From my calculations ,at £4.10 per issue this means they gained £410,000 from the astronomical sales.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT GAGA ??

While every has been going GaGa i feel as if  have been left behind, obviously i appreciate she is a massive star and is doing amazing things for outlandish up and coming designers but when and how did it become possible for one face to have such a huge influence. I decided to look into the world of GaGa a bit more intensely.
is it power in eccentricity ?
or
Amazing PR and Business advisors?

She has her official website in which you can find everything from her current location, her music, her merchandise and her fan sites.

She is number 1 on the Forbes 100 most powerful celebrities list.

Her 2008 single 'Poker Face' was number 2 on iTunes highest sales list after being downloaded   5,131,000 times.

In Spring 2011 the South Carolina University started a 'Lady GaGa' course. the course will study the fashion and social behaviour of Lady GaGa.

According to celebrity net worth she is worth  $110 million.

So it started as music and has morphed into Fashion. As a personal judgement I dont think you learn how to be stylish it is something you already have inside, sure you can keep up with the latest trends and be 'fashionable' but having it naturally means you can wear anything and just somehow make it work. I dont think Lady GaGa has style she has STYLISTS.  so should we be annoyed that she is taking the hidden eccentricity of cities and revealing it to the world in a newer id say unnaturally showy way??.

I believe it is the Social Media power that GaGa holds that has led to her success and consequently the success of everything she touches. So although she doesnt have my vote for Fashionista i do praise her for how she has handled her fame and transformed it into a business, and im sure VOGUE will praise her to.
